By 1966, 85 out of 100 American homes owned at least one Tonka Trucks. Some houses had more. The Tonka Truck became the one toy no boy could live without...
Pretty impressive, right? What’s even more amazing is Tonka Trucks Incorporated began as a metal tie-rack manufacturer in the basement of a schoolhouse.
Back in 1946, three friends – Alvin Tesch, Lynn Baker and Avery Crouse – came together to form Mound Metalcraft. The plan was to market garden implements from their Mound, Minnesota headquarters. Well, as they say, plans only exist to make God laugh.
Before Mound Metalcraft set up shop, a different group called the Streater Company unsuccessfully tried to sell a line of toy trucks from the same schoolhouse basement. Alvin Tesch and the gang liked the idea so much (even though Streater couldn’t make it stick) that they decided to give it a stab. The idea was to use the truck as a product to sell on the side.
Alvin Tesch set to work designing an indestructible toy truck. The result was a steel cast monster of a toy. It wasn’t cute. It wasn’t sleek. But it could take the abuse of any overactive/under medicated school boy, without breaking a sweat.
After the toy’s public release at the 1947 New York Toy Fair, vendors started talking. Shortly after, parents started buying.
Mound Metalcraft didn’t officially become Tonka Toys Incorporated until November of 1955. The name, which means “Great” or “Big” in the Dakota-Suix language, summed up the tenacious toy perfectly. By then, the “indestructible Tonka Truck” was selling like hot cakes across the nation. Every kid in the neighbourhood wanted their own Tonka truck, just to see how indestructible it really was.
What started as a 3 man operation grew... and grew...and grew. The first year alone the company sold 37,000 toy trucks. Today, 120,000 lbs. of yellow paint and 5.2 million lbs. of sheet metal are used every single year to fulfil demand for Tonka Truck toys.
Tonka Trucks Today
In 1991, Hasbro absorbed Tonka Trucks Incorporated. Which brings us to present day. Kids are still smashing their Mighty Tonka Trucks against walls and rocks and little sisters... without leaving a single dent.
Here’s a handful of the top Tonka Trucks on the market today:
1. Tonka TS4000
Tonka TS400 just sounds modern, and in many ways it’s an improvement over the original Mighty Dump Truck. For one it’s bigger and any kid could tell you that bigger is better. On a practical note, a bigger frame means easier pushing for your child and less chance of spilling over in the process. Second, Tonka got rid of the sharp angles in the design, so no more finger cuts. Third, the handle makes it easier to move the truck into the backyard and out of the middle of the living room. This is simply an all around great truck.
2. Tonka Chuck
The Chuck Talking Truck is a sharp exit from Tonka’s “indestructible” roots, but times change and kids expect toys to be interactive. As the name suggests, the toy talks (40+ different phrases) and it also has auto-driving capability. The price is right at about $30, at the time of this writing. And children as young as 2 years old can play with this truck, so they won’t feel left out if older kids are playing with more metal-heavy models. Plus, Tonka Chuck comes with a pretty cool storybook so your kid can learn as he plays.
3. Tonka Classics Dump Truck
This is the original Mighty Dump Truck, recast for today’s generation. Just as indestructible, and just as much fun. You’ll notice that plastic is at a minimum on this model, which is appreciated by a Tonka veteran (such as myself) who wants their boys to have a real toy. It retails at about $15, so very short money. For any kid that’s three and up, this is the Tonka truck to have.
